An Update on USDA’s UMaine Funding Pause

Dear Friends & Supporters

I wanted to personally share an important update that impacts Khmer Maine and the programs we provide to Cambodian American youth and families.

Earlier this week, we learned that the USDA had paused nearly $30 million in funding to the University of Maine System (UMS), including support for UMaine’s Cooperative Extension and 4-H programs—key partners in our efforts to bring food systems education, leadership development, and learning opportunities to youth in Cumberland County.

This pause meant that a third of Khmer Maine’s budget was at risk, putting our small team in a difficult position. As a nonprofit with just one full-time and two part-time staff, the loss of these funds could have severely impacted the programs we’ve spent years building.

Thanks to the swift action of Senator Susan Collins and our Congressional delegation, the USDA has since reversed its decision and restored funding. This is a great relief, but it has also highlighted an important reality: the need for Khmer Maine to build financial resilience so we are not solely dependent on federal funding.

Our partnership with UMaine 4-H has been invaluable, helping us provide Cambodian youth and families with opportunities for education, leadership, and cultural connection. These programs bridge generational gaps, strengthen identity, and foster a sense of belonging—and we want to ensure they remain strong, regardless of external funding changes.

While this was an unexpected challenge, we are grateful for the support that helped resolve it—and for the opportunity to work toward a more stable and sustainable future.

Thank you for being part of our journey. Your support makes all the difference.

With gratitude,
Marpheen Chann
